Growing Irish potatoes is a rewarding activity that can provide both food and income. To get the best harvest, itβs important to follow proper planting steps. Below is a simple guide for farmers and beginners alike.
Step 1: Select the Perfect Land
Choose fertile, well-drained loamy soil with a pH of 5.0 β 6.5. The land should be free from waterlogging and stones, as these hinder growth and cause rotting of tubers.

Step 2: Form the Ridges
Plough the land well and make ridges 75 cm apart. This gives potatoes enough space to develop and also makes weeding easier.

Step 3: Position the Potato Seed
Use certified seed potatoes for best results. Place each seed 30 cm apart on the ridge, with the eyes facing upward. This ensures faster sprouting and healthy plant development.

Step 4: Apply Organic Manure
Add well-decomposed poultry droppings (around 5 tons per hectare) to enrich the soil. Organic manure boosts soil fertility and supports the growth of healthy tubers.

Step 5: Cover the Seed
Cover the seed and manure with fine, loose soil (5β10 cm deep). Avoid burying them too deep, so that sprouts can emerge easily.

πΎ Final Note
By following these five steps carefully, youβll give your Irish potatoes the best start for a healthy and productive harvest. Remember, consistency in care (weeding, watering, and pest control) is just as important as proper planting.
